Accompanist for New Sharon United Methodist Church

We pray that the accompanist at New Sharon UMC will be called to this position as a response to serve God. We hope that guided by the Holy Spirit, the accompanist will enhance the music ministries and contribute to the spiritual growth of the people at New Sharon.

Summary:The accompanist, working closely with the pastor and worship committee, will be responsible for providing music for Sunday morning 11:00 a.m. worship; special services; and the adult choir.

 

 

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrate a passion for and vision of the role of music in the worship of God.
  • Ability to play the piano proficiently, read multi-part choral music, and to accompany congregation, choirs, instrumentalists, and soloists.
  • Exhibit ability to work well with others.

 

Details of Work:

  • Play piano (or organ) for Sunday, 11:00 a.m. worship service. In addition to playing the congregational hymns, this typically includes preparing a prelude, offertory, and postlude, and accompanying the choir’s special music.
  • Work with choir director and minister to select hymns and special music in preparation for choir practice and worship services; Preview new music and make recommendations.
  • Accompany the choir during practice on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m. and Sunday mornings, 9:30-10:00 a.m.
  • Practice with and accompany soloists and instrumentalists.
  • Plan and organize, together with the worship committee, special services, such as Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Holy Week, Easter, Homecoming, All Saints, Hanging of the Greens, Christmas Cantata, and Revival. Also, help arrange and participate in additional rehearsals.
  • Coordinate New Sharon’s participation in external events, such as District Lay Rally and joint Thanksgiving Service with Palmers Grove and Eno UMC.
  • Oversee piano tuning and routine maintenance and repair of piano and organ
  • Collaborate with people at New Sharon and attend appropriate committees, such as worship committee.
  • Hire and prepare substitute musicians when necessary.
  • Provide music for funerals of church members.


Potential Goals:
This position has great potential to grow into one of leadership - overseeing all the music ministries of the church; developing new programs, such as a children’s choir, youth choir, and/or instrumental group; and providing music education opportunities for the entire church family, such as workshops and retreats.
